Studies continue to show that adults and kids are not getting enough fruits and vegetables. Red, sweet, juicy strawberries are one healthy fruit that you won't have any trouble getting your child to eat. Strawberries are one of America's most loved fruits, with the average American consuming eight pounds per year. With strawberry season fast approaching, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy this nutrient-packed fruit while supporting local farmers this spring.

Why eat local strawberries?

When strawberries and other produce are in season, they are at their peak nutritional value. How to buy and store strawberries:

Look for berries without stains, moisture or mold that are firm, plump and dry. Strawberries do not ripen after harvest, so buy red berries and stay away from green or yellow ones. When you get home, remove any damaged berries so they don’t spoil the rest. Strawberries last longer and retain more nutrients if they are stored whole at higher humidity in the coldest place in your fridge, such as a produce drawer. Eat berries within 3 days for the best nutrition, but they can last up to a week in the fridge.

 

How to eat strawberries:

Rinse strawberries in cold water before eating and serve by themselves or in a variety of recipes including salads, smoothies, sandwiches, or parfaits. Strawberries are extremely versatile and can complement sweet or savory dishes. Stock up on seasonal strawberries and freeze them, so you and your kids can enjoy this tasty fruit even after the season is over.
