Halloween is right around the corner, and while tricks are reserved for All Hallow’s Eve only, the treats tend to stick around days and weeks after the holiday making it tough to stay on track with our wellness goals. With that in mind, try the following tricks to have a healthy Halloween.

Plan to eat balanced meals at regularly scheduled times. When we allow ourselves a few additional indulgences for any occasion, it can be tempting to make space for those treats, by cutting back on our regular meals to “save” calories. On the contrary, having regular balanced meals can help keep blood sugar levels stable and appetite controlled to prevent overindulging on sweets later. So before going out trick or treating, plan to have a satisfying and healthy meal.

Power up with protein. Of all three macronutrients, protein is by far the most filling. Not only does this make you feel more satiated, but it also helps with blood sugar stability to prevent a “sugar crash” later. Aim to include a lean source of it at every meal and snack. Excellent protein options include fish and seafood, beans and tofu, lean beef and pork or skinless poultry, low-fat dairy and nuts and seeds.

Remember Out of Sight, Out of Mind. This rule is especially helpful when applied to all the leftover Halloween candy. Avoid leaving it front and center in a candy bowl where you may be tempted to grab a piece or two every time you walk past. Instead, try placing a bowl of fruit on the counter and healthy prepped snacks in the refrigerator and keep the candy in the back of the pantry.

Have fun and enjoy your treats in moderation. No need to completely swear off candy. Remember that Halloween is for fun and that fun foods fit in an overall healthy eating pattern. Plan to enjoy one or two small pieces to satisfy the sweet tooth. Or for a more filling snack, try this sweet and savory pumpkin spice trail mix for a protein and fiber-filled treat.
